The case occurred in Parana state in December 2010, with the result published in early December 2012. Japan, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and South Korea have all temporarily banned Brazilian beef imports.

Egypt has partially banned beef from Brazil, applying restrictions on beef from Parana state. This is expected to have a limited impact on Brazilian exports to Egypt, with shipments from Parana state from January to November totalling 1,109 tonnes swt. Egypt has been Brazil’s second largest market for fresh beef throughout 2012, with exports increasing 44 per cent year-on-year, to 122,700 tonnes swt.

Saudi Arabia has recently announced a nationwide ban on Brazilian beef imports. Saudi Arabia has been another growing market for Brazilian beef, with export up 26 per cent in 2012 when compared year-on-year, to 32,239 tonnes swt. This places Saudi Arabia in the ten largest export markets for Brazilian beef, with the nationwide ban likely to curtail Brazilian growth into the market.

Australian beef exports to Egypt and Saudi Arabia totalled 2,696 tonnes swt and 5,026 tonnes swt respectively throughout 2012.

China also confirmed a ban on Brazilian beef imports. Although volumes are comparatively smaller, exports from Brazil increased five-fold from January to November 2012, to 14,309 tonnes swt.

Chile and the EU, both growing market for Brazilian beef in 2012, announced they won’t applyrestrictions on imports of Brazilian beef and will follow the OIE recommendation that kept the classification of Brazil as a country with insignificant risk of BSE. Russia, Brazil’s largest beef export market, has so far announced no further bans on Brazilian beef after the BSE case.
