WOAH adopts global antimicrobial resistance action plan for 2026-2036

By: The World Organisation for Animal Health's 183 member countries adopted an updated Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance covering the period 2026 to 2036, during WOAH's 93rd General Session on May 21, the organisation announced.
The plan sets out six strategic objectives covering awareness, surveillance, infection prevention, access to antimicrobials, research and innovation, and multisectoral governance. It adopts a One Health approach, recognising the interconnectedness of human, animal, plant and environmental health.
Two days after WOAH's adoption, WHO member states also adopted the updated plan during the World Health Assembly, reinforcing a cross-sector commitment to tackling antimicrobial resistance.
WOAH said the adoption marks the beginning of an implementation phase rather than the end of a process. The Quadripartite partners — FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH — are developing cross-sectoral operational guidance to help member countries translate the strategic objectives into practical action, alongside a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess global progress.
FAO and UNEP continue their respective approval processes.
WOAH is also preparing a series of webinars to support members in advancing antimicrobial resistance action within veterinary services and animal health systems.
