FEFAC sees stable EU feed output in 2025
Cattle and pig feed flat, poultry production forecast to grow
The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) forecasts broadly stable compound feed production in the EU27 in 2025, with total output expected to reach 147.5 million tonnes, up 0.4% from 2024, according to a recent press release from the organisation.
FEFAC market experts said the marginal increase reflects relative stability across most animal production sectors, despite growing uncertainty linked to economic, geopolitical, regulatory and environmental pressures, as well as ongoing animal disease challenges.
Cattle feed production in the EU is forecast at 41.6 million tonnes in 2025, largely unchanged from 2024. Among major producers, Germany is expected to increase output by 3%, while the Netherlands is projected to see a sharp decline of 5%, mainly due to regulatory policies. Spain, the largest cattle feed producer, forecasts a decrease of 3%. Denmark and Poland are expected to post modest increases of 4.5% and 3.9% respectively, while most other member states anticipate stable or slightly lower production. FEFAC noted that environmental policies and animal diseases, including recent outbreaks of highly infectious foot-and-mouth disease, continue to weigh on the sector.
Pig feed production is expected to reach 47.3 million tonnes in 2025, a slight year-on-year decline of 0.5%. Production in Germany and France is forecast to fall by 1.9% and 1.6%, while the Netherlands is projected to record a steep drop of 10%. Spain, the EU’s largest pig feed producer, is expected to stabilise at 13.2 million tonnes. Portugal is forecast to increase output by 1.8% and Poland by 2.7%, while Ireland is projected to grow by 3.2%. Hungary, by contrast, is expected to see a decline of 3.2%. FEFAC said the overall outlook remains stable, with growth in some countries, such as Slovenia (+0.6%) and Bulgaria (+9%), offset by structural changes and continued disease pressure from African swine fever in others.
The poultry feed sector is forecast to grow in 2025, despite ongoing pressure from avian influenza. Production is expected to rise by 1.5% to 50.7 million tonnes. Spain and Belgium are forecast to see strong increases of 5.8% and 5% respectively. French poultry feed production is expected to grow by 1% to 8.14 million tonnes, while Poland is forecast to increase output by 2.3% to 7.44 million tonnes.
Overall, FEFAC said the EU compound feed sector continues to demonstrate resilience, with stability in cattle and pig feed balanced by moderate growth in poultry feed production.
