China suspends JBS beef plant over hormone detection
Vilhena facility is fifth Brazilian plant barred from Chinese market
China has suspended beef imports from a plant belonging to JBS, the world's largest meatpacker, in the northern Brazilian city of Vilhena, Reuters reported, citing Brazilian news outlet Globo Rural on Friday.
The suspension comes after the detection of progesterone, a growth-promoting hormone, in shipments sent by the Brazilian company's plant to China, Globo Rural said, citing a source.
China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) informed Brazilian authorities about the move on Tuesday, Globo Rural added.
JBS and Brazil's Agriculture Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This makes the Vilhena plant the fifth Brazilian beef plant, and JBS' second, currently suspended from exporting to China, according to Globo Rural.
