China sets 2035 goal to preserve Yangtze Delta farmland
Beijing targets 10.77m ha to safeguard long-term food security
China aims to keep at least 161.48 million mu, or 10.77 million hectares, of farmland in the Yangtze River Delta by 2035, Reuters reported, citing the State Council in a 2023-2035 territorial spatial plan for the region, its latest effort to ensure long-term food security.
The plan also calls for at least 9.5 million hectares of farmland in the region to be permanently designated for agricultural use, according to the cabinet.
