US - August feedlot placements up 15%

National Agricultural Statistics Service Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.0 million head on September 1, 2006. The inventory was 10 percent above September 1, 2005 and 10 percent above September 1, 2004. This is the highest September 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.

Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.30 million, 15 percent above 2005 and 9 percent above 2004. Net placements were 2.24 million. During August, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 680,000, 600-699 pounds were 435,000, 700-799 pounds were 535,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 650,000.

Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 2.08 million, 2 percent above 2005 and 8 percent above 2004.

Other disappearance totaled 59,000 during August, 11 percent above 2005 and 5 percent above 2004.
