Meat industry urged to keep up efforts on restoring beef exports to EU

SCOTLAND - There must be no easing back from the efforts to restore beef exports as a fully commercially viable part of the Scotch industry, despite the painfully slow progress being made, or lingering concerns over the level of beef supplies in Scotland. The president of the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers pointed out that prior to the BSE-driven ban on beef exports in 1996, Scottish producers and processors enjoyed a strong and rewarding trade with several countries on mainland Europe, including France, Italy and Germany.
