Govt to Stop Cattle Import from Neighbouring Countries
BANGLADESH - In 2016-17, country’s meat demand was 7.14 million tonnes, but the production was 7.15 million tonnes where the ratio of demand and production was 1:1.DhakaTribune reports that Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda on Wednesday said the ministry was holding meetings with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to stop cattle smuggling from neighbouring countries.
The minister said this while responding to query placed by treasury bench member M Israfil Alam of Naogoan-6 at the house.
As the number of cows and buffaloes along with productivity are on the rise across the country, the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry is regularly holding meetings with the BGB and other law enforcing agencies to stop import of cattle from neighbouring countries, said the minister.
In 2016-17, Bangladesh's meat demand was 7.14 million tonnes, but the production was 7.15 million tonnes as the ratio of demand and production was 1:1, he said. At the same time, country’s milk production was 92,83,000 tonnes against the demand of 1,48,65,000 tonnes.
