More than 317,500 animals have been ear tagged, taking catalogued animals three per cent ahead of targets, says the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA).

Cattle are first in line for a traceability package to be rolled out across all animal species of ‘economic importance’.

Entitled Identification Programme Information and Animal Traceability, the initiative aims to control disease in herds through eradicating infected animals.

High surveillance departments, many near border zones with Ecuador and Venezuela, have been visited by the ICA first.

Efforts started last year, identifying 168,303 animals.
