More Cattle Slaughtered in May

UK - More cattle, sheep and pigs were slaughtered in May in the UK than in the same month of 2013 and meat output was up between five and eight per cent for each species.

The latest release from Defra shows the latest monthly information on the slaughtering of cattle, sheep and pigs. It also includes dressed carcass weight and meat production information.

Key results for May 2014

Cattle

UK prime cattle (steers, heifers and young bulls) slaughterings were 3.2 per cent higher than in May 2013 at 156,000 head.

Beef and veal production was 68,000 tonnes, almost five per cent higher than in May 2013.

Sheep

UK clean sheep slaughterings were 10 per cent higher than in May 2013 at 799,000 head.

Mutton and lamb production was 19,000 tonnes, 8.2 per cent above May 2013.

Pigs

UK clean pig slaughterings were 2.5 per cent higher than in May 2013 at 751,000 head.

Pig meat production was 63,000 tonnes, 5.1 per cent more than in May 2013.
