A joint project between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Agricultural Health Service (SENASA) worked with ranchers over the last year, requiring compliance to operating procedures.

A total of 1,500 animals have benefited in the township, including some 20-30 litres per day Holsteins.

From the success, SENASA chief Heriberto Amador expects new markets to be kept open in Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan, benefitting the region as a whole.

Milk deliveries will become more profitable, he added. Major beneficiary, the Centre for Lepaera Cattleman’s Association, can now market more milk to the city of Santa Rosa de Copan.

“The announcement guarantees national and international consumers of no health risk," said Mr Amador. "This is reflected in the opening up of markets to go to the east.”

“We are very pleased with this achievement for Honduras. The programme has national coverage and we have identified areas with higher cases to install sanitary controls to limit disease."
