The agreement was ratified on March 15 in Machala, in the Ecuadorian province of Loja and involves a grant of $50,000 to fund measures to control and eradicate FMD in the Peru/Ecuador border region.

Improvements will be directed via increased border surveillance, internal movement controls and vaccination schemes.

The change comes as part of the ‘Convention on the Prevention and Control of FMD in the Ecuadorian-Peruvian Border Region' and is claimed by government officials to be the most important disease control policy for the Andean region in recent years.
