UK - More than 80 per cent of farmers find information on EBLEX’s Better Returns Programme (BRP) easy to find and understand, according to a new survey for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The ‘Provision of Advice to Farmers – A survey of scheme effectiveness’ revealed 88 per cent of participants found BRP advice and information easy to understand, while 81 per cent found the information easy to access.

Results from the survey, which forms part of Defra’s full review of how advice and initiatives are used for farmers and land managers, also highlighted that 81 per cent of respondents felt BRP information was easy to relate to the kind of situations faced in their businesses.

EBLEX’s BRP encourages beef and sheep producers to evaluate their businesses to identify where improvements can be made in terms of efficiency, environmental impact and animal performance. Skills and knowledge transfer work is carried out through a programme of direct communication with livestock producers, combined with practical, free events across England. The programme is supported up by a range of informative literature and other resources. Last year BRP ran nearly 270 events for English farmers, attracting almost 7,000 producers.

Chris Lloyd, EBLEX industry development manager, said: “Accessing relevant technical information and understanding how to put it into practice is a key part of the success of any business. That is precisely what the Better Returns Programme is about – helping farmers maximise the potential of their businesses with the help of relevant and easy-to-access information, which the results of the survey for Defra have underlined.”
