Meat & Livestock Australia

URUGUAY - Uruguayan beef exports for January to April increased 10 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year, to 83,101 swt (National Meat Institute).

Contributing to the higher shipments during the first four months of 2012 was a 6 per cent year-on-year rise in exports during April, to 21,886 tonnes swt.

The increase in exports during the first four months of the year was underpinned by strong demand from Israel and the US, with shipments rising 74 per cent and 40 per cent year-on-year, respectively. The rise in overall exports was despite shipments to Russia declining 7 per cent on the corresponding period last year.

Uruguay has the highest per head beef consumption level in the world at 77kg per capita (FAO), but with a population of only 3.3 million people, it also exports 75 per cent of total beef production.
