The pdf report reviews the role of the most important trace elements for beef and sheep production in England and Wales, and provides guidance on assessing deficiencies and the need for supplementation.

“Farmers are usually well aware of the potential impact of a number of trace element deficiencies on their stock,” said Liz Genever, EBLEX livestock scientist.

“However, while a trace element deficiency is often blamed for poor production, it is essential that this is confirmed through independent testing and advice."

“Over-supplementation could waste money and even make matters worse due to imbalance or undesirable interactions in the animal.”

The publication, which can be downloaded from http://www.eblex.org.uk/returns/Better-returns-plus.aspx, is the first of a new suite of literature under the BRP+ banner, which aims to provide more in-depth information to beef and sheep producers on specific topics which can influence their returns.

“The Better Returns Programme has successfully engaged with 21,000 producers across England over the past seven years, communicating regularly through technical literature and events. Its aim is to encourage producers to embrace best practice and new ideas to help improve the efficiency of their beef and sheep enterprise,” said Chris Lloyd, EBLEX industry development manager.

“The new BRP+ range is a response to feedback from producers who want more in-depth material to enable them to further develop their knowledge. It will include more advanced technical publications based on research carried out within the industry, which we believe will address this need.”
