Foot and Mouth Disease Controls Relaxed in KZN
SOUTH AFRICA - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Peterson has relaxed the movement certain meat products out of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) infected zone in KwaZulu-Natal.She announced yesterday morning that she was allowing meat hanged out to dry, and matured animal carcasses, to be moved out of the FMD controlled area in the northern part of the province at least east of the R66 road and north of the Umfolozi River.
The department said yesterday that its provincial counterparts have conducted intensive state veterinary investigations over the past 8 weeks in and the investigations have shown no evidence of active, or any spread of the virus.
While live animals will not be allowed to be moved out of the infected zone, the animal carcasses and dried meat were being allowed to be moved because they were regarded "to pose a minimal risk of transmitting the virus."
A total number of 14 roadblocks coming out of the infected area have been set up by the provincial law enforcement agencies to prevent the movement of cloven-hoofed animals in and out of the FMD-infected area.
