For a number of years, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the UN has worked tirelessly with a number of other organisations and countries to exterminate the disease.
Caused by a virus, rinderpest has killed millions of cattle and other hoofed animals, causing massive economic losses and contributing to famine across the world.
Through targeting rinderpest at local levels, the FAO has managed to stop outbreaks and put in place a system and measures to prevent the disease from reoccurring.
