UK Cattle Slaughter Statistics - October 2009

UK - The latest statistics produced by DEFRA suggest that cattle production in the UK increased in September.

Overall the number of cattle slaughtered in September increased compared to the previous month, however the number of cattle slaughtered is still substantially lower than July 2009, which was a five-week month.

The number of cows and adult bulls slaughtered rose from 36,000 head in August to 42,000 last month. Steers also increased significantly from 68,000 head in August to 82,000 head in September. The number of heifers slaughtered rose by 5,000 head, whilst calves and young bulls numbers remained the same.

The average dressed carcase weight showed little change compared to previous months.

Last month, the UK produced 69,000 tonnes of beef, up 9,000 tonnes from August figures.
