INDIA - The district administration has made extensive arrangements to vaccinate 410,000 cattle in 30 days to protect them from foot and mouth disease, Collector M. Jayaraman has informed.Inaugurating the first foot and mouth disease vaccination camp of this fiscal at Vellankuzhi in Ambasamudram taluk on Saturday,
Mr. Jayaraman said that though the Department of Animal Husbandry had vaccinated 413,000 cattle last year, the farmers had lost 32 cattle to this dreaded disease. Hence, the district administration had allocated Rs. 41 lakh for conducting vaccination camps during this year.
“We’ve formed a 64-member team for conducting 276 camps in the district. After covering 4.10 lakh animals in the first phase, the second round of vaccination will start after six months so that the immunity of the cattle will remain high. The total cost of this programme will be Rs. 1.38m,” Mr. Jayaraman said.
As per the plan, a village in each panchayat will be selected for conducting the vaccination camp before March 2010.
