Cows as Percentage of Kill Exceeds 20 Per Cent
NORTHERN IRELAND, UK - The cows category as a percentage of the total reported cattle kill in Northern Ireland has increased to 21 per cent for November 2008 from under nine per cent in January 2006, according to the LMCNI Weekly Cattle Review.

The number of cows slaughtered has increased by 23 per cent to 70,400 head for the 11 month period up to the end of November 2 0 0 8 from 57,400 head compared to the same period in 2007. Mature bulls slaughtered, as a category, has also increased by 21 per cent to 3,200 head from 2,700 head.
Clean Cattle Numbers Fall
When comparing the first 11 months of 2007 with 2008,all categories within ‘clean cattle’ have recorded a decline in the number of head slaughtered. Steers have fallen by 15 per cent (28,500 head),heifers by nine per cent (12,000 head) and young bulls by 15 per cent (6,600 head). Total cattle slaughter was down eight per cent to 394,000 head from 427,000 head.
