Province Compensates for Mad Cow Crisis

CANADA - Calling it the last bailout livestock farmers will see in the post-BSE industry crisis, the Alberta government unveiled a $356-million recovery plan yesterday.

It will see ranchers, meat packers and other cattle owners getting an average of about $100 per head, with each cheque based on a feed-cost allocation.

The first cheques amount to $150 million, and will be issued immediately.

A second $150-million package will be rolled out in 2009 for farmers who register livestock with a new provincial Alberta Livestock Information System, after first completing several safety tracing prerequisites, including age and premises verification, vaccination history and animal welfare practices of the operator.
