DENMARK - Danish veterinary authorities on Wednesday said they had temporarily closed a slaughterhouse near Copenhagen over fears that a pig due to be killed was infected with foot-and-mouth disease.

A pig sent to the slaughterhouse in Ringsted, some 60 kilometres southwest of Copenhagen, had shown signs of the disease, the Veterinary and Food Administration said in a statement.

The animal and the farm it came from were to be examined by authorities to confirm whether it was indeed a case of the highly contagious viral disease that can affect all cloven-footed animals.
