Indonesia Threatens Aussie Beef Boycott
AUSTRALIA - Australian livestock export industry faces a new threat today, with more than 1,000 Indonesian meat traders rallying outside two feedlots in Jakarta, to get them to boycott Australian beef.According to the news agency ABC, Indonesia buys more than 90 per cent of Australian live cattle exports.
Scott Braithwaite from Wellards Rural Exports, says if the dollar continues to rise, there will be pressure to import meat from India and that could be devastating.
"Bringing meat in from a foot and mouth area like India is certainly high risk", he says.
"But the price of the beef, the price of the protein, is certainly very cheap compared to what Australian beef is.
