Consume More or Import Less

Consume more or import less is the dilemma facing the European beef industry, according to the French Institute of Animal Husbandry (Institut de l'Elevage).

In its analysis of the prospects for the beef and sheep market in Europe until 2015 the Institute raised the question whether the red meat industry in Europe in seriously being eroded and is in decline.

The Institute said that when the 2003 Common Agricultural Policy reforms came in, it predicted that the beef and veal sector would slow down.

However, today, it says that the situation is more delicate. Not only has the sector to anticipate the repercussions of the recent health check on the Common Agricultural Policy, but also the effect of the World Trade Organisation Talks as well as the problems in the milk and cereal sector and the concerns over animal health and disease issues.

The French meat industry organisation, SNIV, however, also adds that if such issues are seen as threats, then they could also be opportunities.
