The Beef Co-operative Research Centre has been working in South Africa to better understand their cattle breeds.

Chief executive Heather Burrow says they have identified several that could be successfully cross-bred with Australian cattle.

"Breeds like the Nguni, the Mashona, the Tuli", she says.

"We already have the Tuli in Australia and another breed that is now being imported into Australia as the result of our program in South Africa is the Drakensberger.
