High Aussie dollar puts pressure on beef industry

AUSTRALIA - A surging Australian dollar is adding to the woes of the beef industry which is already facing expensive feed and tight supply.

Despite a surge in demand for exports of chilled and grain fed beef to Indonesia and the United States, producers, abattoirs and feedlots are finding it tough to make a profit.

The Lot Feeders Association president Malcolm Foster says it could get tougher.

"I expect you will see some reduced production, meatworks working four out of five days, that sort of thing," he said.
