That's why Dennis Hellwig says he's seeking tax increment financing for the Northern Beef Packers processing plant planned for just south of Aberdeen.

The estimated $8.6 million TIF accounts for 20 percent of the beef plant's financing, Hellwig and Norg Sanderson, a Northern Beef Packers supporter, have said. Without it, they say there might not be a beef plant in Brown County.

On April 24, voters will be asked to approve the TIF district that, after county approval, was referred to a countywide vote.

Hellwig and Sanderson say there's more opposition to the beef plant than they expected. They didn't expect the lawsuits filed to halt it and even though past TIF proposals to the county have been met with some resistance, they didn't expect it would be put to a vote.

The TIF would be Brown County's first. Officials from a turkey plant and an ethanol plant have previously talked to county officials about potential TIFs, but action was never taken.
