Korean cattle numbers strong
SOUTH KOREA - According to the latest figures released by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Korean Hanwoo beef cattle numbers reached 2.02 million head at the beginning of December 2006.This was a slight fall on the September quarter, although numbers were up 11% on the December 2005 quarter. Female cattle numbers were up 11% to 1.275 million head, while male cattle numbers increased 10% to 745,000 head.
The Korean domestic Hanwoo herd has been expanding in recent years, after reaching a low during March 2003. Stronger prices and the absence of the US as a competitor have encouraged farmers to increase herd sizes.
Korean domestically produced beef is considered to be of superior quality to imported beef and sells at prices approximately 20% above Australian imported product.
