Zimbabwe to export beef to Hong Kong

ZIMBABWE - Zimbabwe expects to export at least 5,000 tonnes of beef to Hong Kong from early 2007 (Zimbabwe’s The Herald, 11 December). The deal follows intense negotiations between Hong Kong, Zimbabwe's Department of Veterinary Services and the Cold Storage Company.

The deal represents the re-entry of Zimbabwean beef to the export market, after meat from the southern African country was banned from its main markets in Europe (9,000 tonnes) because of foot and mouth disease concerns.

Zimbabwe has also experienced a massive decline in its key agricultural sector following the launch of a land reform program, which resulted in the country’s cattle herd declining by about 70% (from 1.6 million in 2000).
