USDA takes aggressive stance on Mad Cow
US - On Fri. Jan. 16, U.S Secretary of Agriculture Ann M. Veneman met with representatives from Mexico and Canada in Washington D.C. to discuss strategies to prevent the further proliferation of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly referred to as mad cow disease, throughout the North American domestic bovine population.The meeting was held in response to two North American cases of BSE, one in Canada in May 2003 and the more recent case in Washington State on Dec. 23. The infected cow found in the United States had been shipped from Canada in August 2001.
