Offal values per head were generally higher compared to August, with the exception of offal values for grainfed steers (due to lower prices for grainfed tongues). Tallow and meat meal prices were higher, while hide prices remained lower.

The potential co-product value to be obtained from a Japanese grassfed steer averaging 331kg cwt (assuming 100% collection and sale of offal for edible use) was estimated to be $210.94/head in September – 1% above August, but 10% below year ago levels. Offal represented an estimated 47% of this co-product value, hides 28%, tallow 16% and meat meal 9%.

In contrast, the potential co-product value from a Japanese grainfed steer averaging 350kg cwt was estimated to be $236.80/head – 3% below August and 7% below year ago levels.
