Monitoring beef cow nutrition and the role played in profitability can be done on www.bodyconditionscoring.ca , an interactive site as part of a multi-stakeholder initiative under a local government project Growing Froward 2.

Tracking body condition effects calf health, reproduction, weaning weights and other crucial factors, according to the Beef Cattle Research Council, the organisation launching the website.

“The importance of maintaining cows’ fat cover at an optimal level is underrated,” said Karin Schmid of the Alberta Beef Producers.

“Many producers don’t realize how much thin or over-fat cows hurt their bottom lines, and how easy and effective body condition scoring is when figuring out how to adjust rations and keep cows in the right condition.”

A four minute video detailing cow conditions and how to measure fat cover is housed on the site, as are the nutritional options for altering cattle condition.

The information is available on USB sticks for those in areas where internet connection is a barrier.
