Optimism in UK Beef Sector Reflected at Beef Expo

UK - There was an air of optimism at Beef Expo 2012, organised by the NBA and held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire, yesterday, reflecting a year in which beef prices have moved upwards and farmers have gained confidence in the sector.

Urging farmers to maintain this confidence, NBA Assistant Director Joanne Pugh spoke at the event to emphasise the high quality and high demand for British beef.

“There is huge optimism within the beef sector, mainly because of the tightness of supply and the fact that your cattle are in hot demand. The future is very bright for the UK beef sector,” she said.

Attendance was good, with 4,500 people coming through the gates, which was a significant increase from last year’s Beef Expo, held at Newark.

It was a particularly good day for two farmers who attended the event and won the NBA’s free prize draw. Alan Swale from Sowerby, Lancashire, won a IAE Crusader Cattle Crush worth £1,400, and Tim Bowden of Dorchester, Dorset, a Gallagher HR3 EID Reader worth £750.

In the stockjudging competitions, the overall winner was Sarah Cheaker from Piling, Bristol, and the top placed YFC member was Jane Righton from Hallow, Worcestershire.
The event attracted a record number of trade stands, and three of these were rewarded for their superb presentation efforts. The best breed society stand was the Hereford Cattle Society, the best indoor stand was Oliver Seeds, and the best outdoor stand was Huntsmoor Park Farm.

Summing up the day, Paul Westaway, NBA Beef Expo 2012 Chairman, said: “Beef Expo was a resounding success, very well attended despite the wonderful weather and was a great showcase for the British beef industry.”
