The 14 participants include some of the largest UK pork processors and beef exporters, as well as traders with strong links with Southern Africa.

The Republic of South Africa is the largest importer of meat on the African continent and must meet the needs of its growing population and higher incomes.

Jean-Pierre Garnier, head of exports for EBLEX and BPEX, said: “South Africa has the potential to become a major partner to our industry. It is already of major importer of many types of meat and offal, from pork ribs to beef hearts.

“We are expecting a strong turnout at our meetings in Cape Town and Johannesburg and a warm welcome from our South African friends. We have a long history in common in meat trading. We already have very good relations with meat importers which will be further strengthened by the mission.

“This important visit forms part of a larger development to promote our products outside of the European Union and further grow our already successful meat exports.”
