It is the first time the organisations have attended the exhibition, which took place in Sofia from 10 to 13 November.

Bulgarians consume all parts of the animal as part of the Balkan cookery tradition, and their local dry sausage specialities, such as the famous lukanika, require the import of pork and beef raw materials. Bulgaria is a net importer of meat as local production is small, making it an ideal export market for the UK.

Jean-Pierre Garnier, head of exports for EBLEX and BPEX said: "We were made very welcome by the Bulgarian meat sector and the local meat processors' association. We also enjoyed a visit from the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Miroslav Naydenov.

"The exporters present were surprised by the high level of interest from importers and retailers.

"The major interest for the UK meat sector is as an outlet for a great variety of offal, for which there is little demand in Britain. In this respect, Bulgaria is very complementary to the UK market."
