Congress Should Not Interfere With GIPSA

“The proposed rule addresses concerns that have been discussed for decades, and was developed from the 2008 Farm Bill. A long-standing process is already in place for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to receive comments, review the input and make changes to the rule based on public input. We encourage Congress to allow this process to continue so that U.S. farmers and ranchers may have their voices heard.
“The current system is broken and something must be changed. Producers are being forced out of production every day. US family farmers and ranchers have been at the mercy of packers for far too long.
“US family famers and ranchers must be allowed the right to access a fair marketplace. The proposed GIPSA rule is essentially a Farmer and Rancher Bill of Rights to make competition fair in the livestock marketplace.
“We hear from beef, pork and poultry producers daily who support the rule and the rule-making procedure. We urge members of Congress to allow the process of public notice and comment to conclude without interference from official letters, legislation or language in the appropriations bill so USDA can move forward with its decision in a timely manner.”
