Korea Gobbling Up US Beef
SOUTH KOREA - USDA reports beef sales to South Korea have increased rapidly in recent weeks. For the last week of July, U.S. weekly beef exports to South Korea were reported at 2.3 thousand metric tons, the largest volume in the past year. Weekly sales of U.S. beef to South Korea are expected to soon be the largest since 2003, prior to discovery of the first case of BSE in the U.S.
Imported U.S. beef ribs reportedly cleared South Korea 's quarantine inspections August 5. More than a ton of short ribs, chuck ribs, rib fingers and flanks were expected to reach consumers within a week, according to Korean government officials. This marks the first bone-in beef products allowed in South Korea in five years.
South Korea once was the third largest export market for U.S. beef. Prior to the BSE ban, Korea imported more than $800 million in U.S. beef during 2003.
