UK Slaughter Statistics June 2008
UK - The number of Steers and Heifers sent for slaughter during May fell sharply compared to the previous two months according to the latest figures from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.However, the young bulls sent to slaughter rose slightly, from 18,000 in march to 23,000 in May. There were 25,000 sent for slaughter in April, but there were five weeks in April and only four in March and May. Calves remained steady between March and May averaging out at two thousand.
Average dressed carcase weights rose for steers in May to 360.7 kilogrammes. Young bulls, cows, adult bulls and calves all increase their weights, but heifer weights were down from 313.3 kilogrammes in March to 310.8 kilogrammes in May
The surveys of slaughterhouses also collect information on the meat produced. This enables the total quantity of meat produced in the United Kingdom to be calculated. Home-killed production includes livestock imported into the United Kingdom for slaughter.
In March 66 thousand tonnes of of beef were killed, this went up to 88 thousand tonnes in April and back down to 64 thousand tonnes in May.
