Japan and US Agree to Re-establish Beef Trade - Implications For Producers

US - On Saturday October 23 the US and Japan announced an agreement to re-establish beef trade. Japan, the largest beef export market for the US in 2003 has blocked US beef for 10 months after the US announced finding a single confirmed case of BSE in the country on December 23, 2003. Taiwan, a much smaller, but important market also agreed to trade again with the US. The announcement was welcome news to the US beef sector, but markets and producers appear to be taking a wait and see attitude as markets remained calm on Monday after the announcement.
