Health authorities from both countries determined that registered cattle from free herds certified by the National Service for Health, Safety and Food Quality (Senasica) pose negligible risk for areas accredited to export standing calves.

  • The official veterinarians of Agriculture certify the livestock production units that demonstrate that their animals are free of bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis, among other diseases.
  • Certified herds are supported to continue supplying national producers of quality cattle for breeding stock, in order to continue with the genetic improvement process in the country.
  • The governments of Mexico and the United States updated the protocol for the export of cattle, which will allow producers of high-register cattle, from free herds certified by the National Service of Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (Senasica), to mobilize their animals throughout the national territory without endangering areas that have international recognition for exporting live cattle.

This was announced by the chief director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, at the inauguration of the National Brahman Cattle Exhibition, which is held in Palenque, Chiapas, on July 25.

He explained that experts from Senasica and the Plant and Animal Health Inspection Service (APHIS) agreed that the mobilization of high-quality genetic cattle represents an insignificant risk for the spread of diseases, due to the fact that in its process Breeding producers apply strict health controls in order to keep their herds free of bovine diseases, such as tuberculosis, brucellosis and pests such as ticks.

For this reason, they determined the producers of registered cattle from free herds certified by the Official Veterinarians of Senasica will be able to move their animals without risk to areas with recognition within the National Campaign against Bovine Tuberculosis, accredited to export standing calves to the US.

In this way, he pointed out, certified herds are supported to continue supplying national producers with quality cattle for breeding stock and can continue with the genetic improvement process in the country.

The general coordinator of Livestock of the Ministry of Agriculture, Arturo Macosay Córdova, recognized the efforts of Mexican farmers, who have always strived to search for the best genetic traits for their herds.

The federal official assured Mexico's national livestock is stronger than ever, mainly in health matters, due to the joint effort between the productive sector and the government.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of Chiapas, Zaynia Andrea Gil Vázquez, on behalf of the state productive sector highlighted the work of the Ministry of Agriculture to reestablish the mobilization of high-registration livestock to free zones of the country.

He indicated that these breeds represent the effort and commitment of the cattle ranches of the state to contribute to the national economy and enhance the livestock sector.

He specified that, in conjunction with Senasica, the productive sector and the Secretariats of Agriculture of Chiapas and Tabasco developed a strategic plan to address the health issue of cattle as a single region.

He assured that Chiapas will not cease in its objective of achieving better conditions of animal health and genetic improvement, which will contribute to guaranteeing healthy, safe and secure food for Mexicans.

The president of the Regional Cattle Union of Catazajá, Tito Germán Coss, stressed that, together with the health authorities, the producers have strengthened the breeding of high genetic quality cattle in the south-east of the country.

The president of the Association of Purebred Breeders of Chiapas, Marco Antonio Barba, said that this exhibition represents the opportunity for medium and small bovine producers to have high quality genetic material at their disposal and with the strictest sanitary controls.

The president of the Mexican Association of Cebu Breeders, Ricardo Casanova, said that this exhibition has 427 specimens from 54 herds from the south-southeast.

It is noteworthy that certified free herds are located in controlled regions and are verified by Official Veterinarians in order that they can move their livestock to regions that, in accordance with the requirements of the National Campaign against Bovine Tuberculosis, are in more advanced stages.

In order for the production unit to obtain the status, the animals must give negative results to the diagnostic tests carried out by an Official Veterinarian specialized in the ruminant area.

High registration cattle, also called sexually intact, are those that are pure in breed —with certain characteristics, certify their origin, individual behavior and genetics— and are used for the reproduction of cattle of genetic quality.
