Brazil recognizes 6 states as free from FMD without vaccination

23 October 2020

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) published Normative Instruction No. 52, which recognizes the states of Acre, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Rondônia as free from foot-and-mouth disease. Regions of Amazonas and Mato Grosso were also recognized.

To carry out the health status transition, states and regions met basic requirements, such as improving official veterinary services and implementing a structured program to maintain the disease-free condition, among others, in line with the guidelines of the World Health Organization's Terrestrial Code. Animal Health (OIE).

With national recognition, Brazilian Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina points out that the states will have the opportunity to expand their participation in the international market.

“More than 40 million heads will be ready for export to more demanding markets. Brazil is already free of foot and mouth disease with vaccination, but this block will be free without vaccination. And that should improve the value of products from these places to export to markets such as Japan, South Korea, which are more demanding and do not accept vaccinated beef,” explains the minister.

For the director of the Animal Health Department, Geraldo Moraes, national recognition by the Map is one of the steps to achieve international recognition with the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health).

"The expectation is to have this recognition by the organization in May 2021 for these states," Moraes highlights. According to him, the ministry forwarded, the Brazilian claim to the OIE for international recognition. These states will undergo a rigorous evaluation by professionals appointed by the organization.
