COVID-19 has infected more than 3,000 US meat plant workers

A union representing US meat packing workers has reported that more than 3,000 workers have contracted the new coronavirus.

Reuters reports that the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the largest meat packing union in the US, has reported more than 3,000 cases of COVID-19. At least 44 workers have died from the disease, reflecting an increasing toll on plant employees.

The union has called on the Trump administration and meat companies like JBS SA and Tyson Foods Inc to take additional action to protect workers from the disease. The union reported 35 workers deaths in meat packing as of 12 May.
