Quick Tips... Which implant provides greater returns on wheat pasture?

Oklahoma cattleman Jerry White keeps a watchful eye out for implant options that provide the greatest possible returns. Recently, White implemented a head-to-head comparison trial — Synovex® One Grass versus Component® TE-G implants — to see whether the new 200-day Synovex implants could increase weight gain and profits for his stocker operation.

“I didn’t anticipate that much of a difference,” admits White, regarding the additional 22 pounds of gain demonstrated in cattle implanted with Synovex One Grass compared with those implanted with Component TE-G.

Efficiency is key at the diversified White Brothers Cattle Company, which consists of 1,500 stocker cattle and 150 cow/calf pairs, as well as corn for silage and winter wheat.

“Based on the results, we will certainly be looking to use Synovex One implants when we have a set of cattle we intend to keep out on pasture 140 days or longer. Implanting once is much better than trying to bring them back in to re-implant later.”

White noted how implants are valuable tools for stocker operators to leverage because, “We’re basically the middle man. We can’t control how much that calf costs, and we can’t control what we sell him for as a feeder calf. Anything we can do to either reduce our costs or increase the size of that calf, we need to take advantage of.”

Considering the cost of implants and added gain, it’s estimated that cattle implanted with Synovex One Grass had a 6% increase in average daily gain and a $25 per-head advantage over those implanted with Component TE-G. *,**,1 “The profit is significant, and a lot of times, that could be the difference between a profit or a loss. It’s just one of the efficiencies that we need to take advantage of in our operation,” said White.
