Cattle Council of Australia president Howard Smith said the increase from 350 kilograms to 450 kilograms only strengthens the valuable Australian-Indonesian trade relationship.

“This increase to feeder cattle average weight will be a boon to the northern cattle industry and essentially opens up a whole new market for producers.”

“Cattle producers will have more flexibility to send higher weight gain cattle,” Mr Smith said.

As part of the changes to the livestock trade terms between the two countries, feeder cattle up to 48 months can also now be shipped to Indonesia, up from a 30-month limit.

The import permit period has also changed from a trimester cycle to an annual system.

“Indonesia is our biggest market for live cattle exports.

“These changes bring more certainty and clarity for producers exporting to Indonesia and delivers benefits for the entire supply chain,” Mr Smith said.

Cattle Council has been pushing for better market access and the reduction of non-tariff barriers in existing and new markets.

“The changes from the trimester cycle import permit system is an excellent example of a non-tariff barrier holding trade back – changing to the annual system will reduce the red tape for the industry.”

The trade relationship between Indonesia and Australia has been and continues to be very important to the Australian beef industry.
