Meat & Livestock Australia Limited (MLA) noted that export performance, as in Australia, is crucial for Uruguay livestock sector, accounting for almost 70 per cent of total production.

The rise was mostly driven by the higher cattle slaughter totalled 2.12 million head, firm steer prices and growing demand in China, USA, Canada.

Uruguayan beef is recognized by the OIE as Foot-and-Mouth Disease free-with-vaccination, having a negligible risk of BSE – it means more favourable access to many markets, MLA added.

China is the major destination for Uruguayan beef with 24 per cent year-on-year increase of import, accounting for 35 per cent of total exports.

Despite the overall decline on beef shipments to the EU (down 4 per cent, to 37,015 tonnes swt), exports under the EU grainfed quota increased 12 per cent on the previous fiscal year, to 10,951 tonnes swt, with the average export price (FOB) also up 3.5 per cent, at $9.40/kg.
