BRAZIL – Saudi Arabian trade officials have signalled that an end to the embargo on Brazilian beef is likely ahead of a meat standards visit to Brazil next week.

Minister of Agriculture Livestock and Supply for Brazil, Neri Geller, received a ‘positive signal’ from Saudi Arabian ministers on Sunday.

If realised, the ban lift will end a two year trade block in place since an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in December 2012.

Extensive efforts to restore trade have been ongoing, said Mr Geller.

He added: "The recovery of this market further strengthens the country's position as a benchmark to meet growing global demand for food and reinforces the confidence of the international market in the robustness of our system of animal health surveillance."
