Methane Figures Are 50 Per Cent Higher Than Thought

27 November 2013

US – Methane emissions could be 50 per cent higher than previously thought, according to a new analysis based on atmospheric measurements.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, based on 12,700 observations from eight monitoring towers, the study claims to offer the most exact mapping of US methane output.

Anthropogenic emissions of methane in the United States includes reconstructions of wind and weather patterns to explain methane collected by aircraft in 2007 and 2008.

The report scrutinised cattle emissions apart form oil and gas operations by relying on simultaneous detections of propane. This is associated with hydrocarbon production but not with cattle.
