Hungarian Cattle Numbers on the Rise

HUNGARY - According to the census on 1 June, Hungary's cattle herd continues to increase while the pig numbers are in long-term decline. Overall, poultry numbers follow a seasonal pattern but there were 30 per cent fewer turkeys that 12 months previously.

The growth of cattle stock lasting since December 2010 continued, according to the Hungarian Central Statistics Office. The number of sheep rose somewhat in the last six months, while the number of pigs slightly decreased. The stock of poultry showed an increase in line with seasonality compared to the stock in December.

The number of cattle was 758,000 on 1 June 2013 according the present standing of data processing, the stock increasing by 25,000 since June 2012 and by 5,000 since the survey in December 2012. The cow stock (335,000) did not change over a year, their number decreasing by 27,000 (seven per cent) since June 2003.

The number of pigs was 2.892 million on 1 June, 64,000 fewer than the stock in December and 20,000 less than one year earlier. The number of pigs exceeded five million 10 years earlier, however, it has been below three million since June 2012. The number of breeding sows (194,000) fell by 11,000 from last year.

The number of chickens was 34 million in June, 1.1 million or three per cent fewer than one year earlier. Compared to 1 December 2012, the stock was up by 3.5 million (12 per cent). The stock of laying hens of 11.3 million was nearly one million (10 per cent) more than one year earlier and 814,000 (seven per cent) fewer than six months earlier.

The goose stock rose by 626,000 (19 per cent) in the past year, their number reached almost four million on 1 June 2013.

The stock of ducks was 4.6 million, 113,000 or two per cent more than in June 2012.

The turkey stock was 2.2 million, 900,000 (29 per cent) below one year previously.

The sheep stock was 1.2 million – of which the number of ewes was 810,000 – on 1 June 2013, which were 4,000 and 30,000 fewer, respectively, than the figures for June 2012.

The stock of goats did not change over a year; their number was 88,000 on 1 June.
