A total of $1.15 million has been cut from the budget that supports beef promotion, research, marketing, industry communication and customer information programmes.

The reductions affect a wide range of programmes from veal promotion to foreign marketing schemes.

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has had $300,000 cuts from, reducing the envelope from $7.9 million to $7.6 million.

Main beneficiaries of the Beef Board’s generosity include the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association which is set to get $27.2 million and the USMEF ($7.6 million).

Although agreements were reached on the budget reductions, Arkansas cattleman and Beef Board operating committee chairman Weldon Wynn said that task was not easy.

“I am so proud of how well members of this committee dug in and made the tough decisions,” said Mr Wynn. “We had two days of great discussion about how to do what’s best for all producers and importers who pay their hard-earned dollars into this checkoff program.”

Mr Wynn added: "I am just so pleased to let all beef producers and importers that our new committee structure and process helped us devise a coordinated plan of work for 2014 that points their checkoff investments directly at the goals of the Beef Industry Long Range Plan.

“Our budget continues to tighten every year, but we have tightened our processes along with our belts to leverage every checkoff dollar to the greatest extent possible.”
