US Red Meat Production Up During July

US - US red meat production was up across all categories during July, compared with last year, in line with higher slaughter, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Livestock Slaughter report.

Cattle slaughter was four per cent higher than last year, at 2.89 million head, which drove a corresponding four per cent rise in beef production to 2.29 billion lbs cwtm, reports MLA.

Calf slaughter was also up four per cent, but lighter carcases resulted in veal production lifting just one per cent, to 9.6 million lbs.

Hog slaughter rose six per cent on last July, to 9.08 million head, pushing pork production up seven per cent, to 1.84 billion lbs cwt.

Lamb and mutton production was  13 per cent higher than last year, at 14.1 million lbs cwt, with an average carcase reaching 133 lbs, and total slaughter of 211,600 head.
